|Sports Program for Autistic Kids|
Autism is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder that usually appears before a child turns 3 years old. The diagnoses of autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental delay-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), Rhett's Disorder and childhood disintegrative disorder are included in the autism spectrum disorders. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. Autism affects the brain's developmental regions of social interaction, communication skills and intellectual functioning resulting in deficits in communication, social interaction and leisure activities. Many programs remediate the autistic child's educational needs in and out of the classroom; however, parents have found few resources available that provide physical fitness and sports programs for autistic children. Sports teach social skills and diminish behaviors such as pacing, head-banging and spinning objects.
